Influence of soaking Malus domeri (Bois) Chev. leaves on gut microbiota and metabolites of long-living elderly individuals in Hezhou city, Guangxi, China

To investigate the effects of drinking the soaking of Malus domeri (Bois) Chev. leaves on gut microbiota and metabolites of long-living elderly individuals in Hezhou city, Guangxi, China. It has been reported that longevity is closely related to metabolism and the gut microbiota. The 16S rRNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were used to analysis fecal samples and explore the factors affecting longevity in the region. Interestingly, we discovered, that elderly individuals who had been drinking the soaking of M. domeri (Bois) Chev. leaves for a long time exhibited higher diversity of the gut microbiota than without drinking the soaking, notably. The proportions of Ruminococcaceae and Prevotella were decreased in those who did not drink this soaking. In addition, a total of 106 metabolites were characterized, and the people of long-lived people (> 90 years old) and elderly people (< 90 years old) who drinking soaking of M. domeri (Bois) Chev. leaves significantly altered the gut microbiota and upregulated levels of haplopine, farnesol, genipic acid, momordicinin, 2-hydroxyestrone, hydroxyphenyllactic acid, caffeic acid, sophoraflavanone B, and soyasaponin I. We preliminarily determined that M. domeri (Bois) Chev. leaves consumption may be an important factor affecting longevity in this area.

Interactions between the gut bacterial community of Exopalaemon carinicauda and infection by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei

To explore the relationship between the intestinal flora of Exopalaemon Carinicauda and infection by Enterocytozoo Hepatopenaei (EHP), we analyzed the species and richness of gut microbiota in infected individuals in different EHP load groups [i.e., control (C), high load (H), and low load (L)] using gene sequencing after infection. The results showed that the abundance of intestinal flora in the high-load EHP group was significantly lower than that in the healthy group. Based on the UPGMA cluster tree and PCoA analysis, with comparisons to healthy shrimp, the gut microbiota of the EHP high load and low load groups were clustered into one branch, which indicated that EHP infection changed the composition of the gut microbiota of infected shrimps. The heat map analysis of species abundance clustering revealed that the dominant bacteria in the low EHP load group and the control group were beneficial genera such as Lactococcus, Ligilactobacillius, and Bifidobacterium, but the dominant bacteria in the high EHP load group were harmful genera such as Pseudomonas, Photobacterium, and Candidatus hepatincola. The functions of the intestinal flora predicted that most genes related to metabolism were more abundant in healthy shrimp, most genes related to metabolism and the organisms’ system were more abundant in the low EHP load group, and most genes related to diseases and environmental information processing were more abundant in the high EHP load group. After separation and purification, the dominant bacteria (Bifidobacterium animalis in healthy shrimp and Lactococcus garvieae in the low EHP load group) and the non-dominant bacteria (Macrococus caseolyticus in the low EHP load group) were obtained. Each of these isolated strains were used together with EHP to infect E. carinicauda, and the results showed that Bifidobacterium animali and Lactococcus garvieae significantly reduced the EHP load in EHP-infected individuals. At the same time, the morphology and structure of the hepatopancreas and intestinal tissue of EHP-infected E. carinicauda were improved. No improvement was seen in tissue that was infected with Macrococus caseolyticus.

Highly conserved bifidobacteria in the human gut: Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum as a potential modulator of elderly innate immunity.

Aging is a physiological and immunological process involving the deterioration of human health, characterised by the progressive alteration of organs and their functions. The speed and extent of such decline are dependent on lifestyle, environment, and genetic factors. Moreover, with advancing age, humans become progressively more fragile and prone to acute and chronic diseases. Although the intestinal microbiota is predisposed to perturbations that accompany aging and frailty, it is generally accepted that the gut microbiota engages in multiple interactions that affect host health throughout the host life span. In the current study, an exhaustive in silico investigation of gut-associated bifidobacteria in healthy individuals from birth to old age revealed that Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum is the most prevalent member, especially during infancy and in centenarians. Moreover, B. longum subsp. longum genome reconstruction and strain tracing among human gut microbiomes allowed the identification of prototypes of this taxon in the human gut microbiota of healthy elderly individuals. Such analyses guided culturomics attempts to isolate B. longum subsp. longum strains that matched the genomic content of B. longum subsp. longum prototypes from healthy elderly individuals. The molecular effects of selected B. longum subsp. longum strains on the human host were further investigated using in vitro microbe-host interactions, revealing differences in the host immune system transcriptome, with a reduction in gene expression of inflammation-related cytokines. These intriguing findings support the potential anti-aging effects of elderly associated prototypes of B. longum subsp. longum.

Optimizing Akkermansia muciniphila Isolation and Cultivation: Insights into Gut Microbiota Composition and Potential Growth Promoters in a Chinese Cohort

The study aims to analyze the composition of the gut microbiota in Chinese individuals using metagenomic sequencing technology, with a particular focus on the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk). To improve the efficiency of Akk isolation and identification accuracy, modifications were made to the enrichment culture medium and 16S rRNA universal primers. Additionally, potential growth-promoting factors that stimulate Akk growth were explored through in vitro screening. The research results revealed that the abundance of Akk in Chinese fecal samples ranged from 0.004% to 0.4%. During optimization, a type of animal protein peptide significantly enhanced the enrichment efficiency of Akk, resulting in the isolation of three Akk strains from 14 fecal samples. Furthermore, 17 different growth-promoting factors were compared, and four factors, including galactose, sialic acid, lactose, and chitosan, were identified as significantly promoting Akk growth. Through orthogonal experiments, the optimal ratio of these four growth-promoting factors was determined to be 1:1:2:1. After adding 1.25% of this growth-promoting factor combination to the standard culture medium, Akk was cultivated at 37° for 36 h, achieving an OD600nm value of 1.169, thus realizing efficient proliferation and optimized cultivation of Akk. This study provides important clues for a deeper understanding of the gut microbiota composition in Chinese individuals, while also offering effective methods for the isolation and cultivation of Akk, laying the groundwork for its functional and application research in the human body.

The impact of exercise on the gut microbiota in middle-aged amateur serious runners: a comparative study.

Exercise, health, and the gut microbiota (GM) are strongly correlated. Research indicates that professional athletes, especially ultra-marathon runners, have unique GM characteristics. However, more research has focused on elite athletes, with little attention given to amateur sports enthusiasts, especially those in the middle-aged population. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of long-term running on the composition and potential functions of the GM in middle-aged individuals. We compared the GM of 25 middle-aged serious runnerswith 22 sedentary healthy controls who had minimal exercise habitsusing 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Additionally, we assessed dietary habits using a food frequency questionnaire. Statistical analysis indicates that there is no significant difference in dietary patterns between the control group and serious runners. Diversity analysis results indicate that there is no significant difference in α diversity between the two groups of GM, but there is a significant difference in β diversity. Analysis of the composition of GM reveals that Ruminococcus and Coprococcus are significantly enriched in serious runners, whereas Bacteroides, Lachnoclostridium, and Lachnospira are enriched in the control group. Differential analysis of functional pathway prediction results reveals significant differences in the functional metabolism levels of GM between serious runners and the control group. Further correlation analysis results indicate that this difference may be closely related to variations in GM. In conclusion, our results suggest that long-term exercise can lead to changes in the composition of the GM. These changes have the potential to impact the overall health of the individual by influencing metabolic regulation.

Daily intake of baru (Dipteryx alata Vog.), a Cerrado native almond, promotes changes in the intestinal microbiota of individuals with obesity: A pilot study

The Brazilian Cerrado biome is rich in plant biodiversity, with fruits that have unique sensory characteristics and high nutritional quality. Among the various fruits, baru (Dipteryx alata Vog.) has attracted the attention of researchers because of its high lipid, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, and micronutrient (minerals and vitamins) contents. The present study evaluated the effects of regular consumption of baru almonds for over 60 days on the biochemical and anthropometric profiles and fecal microbiota of obese individuals. A pilot study was conducted on 15 individuals with obesity who were instructed to consume a 20-gram portion of baru almonds throughout the day. The body composition was assessed using anthropometric measurements. Blood pressure, glucose levels, lipid profile, serum insulin and iron contents, and fecal microbiota composition were determined at baseline (day 0) and after 60 days. Baru almond consumption contributed to changes in biochemical parameters, improved HDL cholesterol levels, and reduced total and LDL cholesterol levels. Some positive changes in the microbiota composition after consuming baru almonds include a decrease in the Faecalibacterium family and an increase in the Provotella genus. Therefore, ingesting baru almonds can modulate gut microbiota of individuals with obesity.

Structural characteristics of gut microbiota in longevity from Changshou town, Hubei, China

The gut microbiota (GM) and its potential functions play a crucial role in maintaining host health and longevity. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential relationship between GM and longevity. We collected fecal samples from 92 healthy volunteers (middle-aged and elderly: 43–79 years old; longevity: ≥ 90 years old) from Changshou Town, Zhongxiang City, Hubei, China. In addition, we collected samples from 30 healthy middle-aged and elderly controls (aged 51–70 years) from Wuhan, Hubei. The 16S rDNA V3 + V4 region of the fecal samples was sequenced using high-throughput sequencing technology. Diversity analysis results showed that the elderly group with longevity and the elderly group with low body mass index (BMI) exhibited higher α diversity. However, no significant difference was observed in β diversity. The results of the microbiome composition indicate that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota are the core phyla in all groups. Compared to younger elderly individuals, Akkermansia and Lactobacillus are significantly enriched in the long-lived elderly group, while Megamonas is significantly reduced. In addition, a high abundance of Akkermansia is a significant characteristic of elderly populations with low BMI values. Furthermore, the functional prediction results showed that the elderly longevity group had higher abilities in short-chain fatty acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and xenobiotic biodegradation. Taken together, our study provides characteristic information on GM in the long-lived elderly population in Changshou Town. Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction and Gut Microbiota in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Assessment, Mechanisms, and Therapeutic Considerations.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a type of metabolic stress liver injury closely related to insulin resistance (IR) and genetic susceptibility without alcohol consumption, which encompasses a spectrum of liver disorders ranging from simple hepatic lipid accumulation, known as steatosis, to the more severe form of steatohepatitis (NASH). NASH can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), posing significant health risks. As a multisystem disease, NAFLD is closely associated with systemic insulin resistance, central obesity, and metabolic disorders, which contribute to its pathogenesis and the development of extrahepatic complications, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and certain extrahepatic cancers. Recent evidence highlights the indispensable roles of intestinal barrier dysfunction and gut microbiota in the onset and progression of NAFLD/NASH. This review provides a comprehensive insight into the role of intestinal barrier dysfunction and gut microbiota in NAFLD, including intestinal barrier function and assessment, inflammatory factors, TLR4 signaling, and the gut-liver axis. Finally, we conclude with a discussion on the potential therapeutic strategies targeting gut permeability and gut microbiota in individuals with NAFLD/NASH, such as interventions with medications/probiotics, fecal transplantation (FMT), and modifications in lifestyle, including exercise and diet.

Prolonged Intake of Luvos Healing Earth does not alter the Composition of the Gut Microbiota in Patients with Diarrhea-predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Healthy Controls.

The mineral compound Luvos Healing Earth (LHE) is a commercially available remedy empirically used for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect of prolonged LHE therapy on gut microbiota in healthy individuals and in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). In this prospective exploratory study, a total of 20 participants, including 12 healthy controls and 8 patients with IBS-D, received treatment with LHE (Magenfein Granulat, 1 sachet bid) for 6 weeks. Fecal samples were collected for microbiota analysis in the morning fasting state at regular intervals at 6 different timepoints: 2 weeks before starting therapy (Screen), and every 2 weeks during LHE therapy (V0-V3). Additionally, a follow-up visit was scheduled 4 weeks after the end of treatment (V4). Microbiota analysis was performed using the GA-map® Dysbiosis Test Lx v2. Dysbiosis Index, bacterial diversity, as well as the balance or imbalance of functionally important bacteria were assessed. The microbiota analysis revealed an overlap in gut microbiota profiles between healthy controls and patients with IBS-D. Bacterial communities were consistently stable during the entire treatment period, and no significant variations in composition were observed 4 weeks after the end of the therapeutic intervention. There was a remarkable stability of microbiota profiles over time within each individual and a high inter-individual variation. The majority of fecal samples exhibited profiles, reflecting an eubiotic state, with no significant changes in dysbiosis index, functional bacteria profiles, or bacterial diversity. Our findings indicate intraindividual resilience of microbiota consortia during the entire study period. Prolonged intake of LHE does not cause significant alterations in fecal microbiota profiles in healthy controls and patients with IBS-D. Luvos Healing Earth does not affect the stability of gut microbial diversity and bacterial functions.

Sialylation of dietary mucin modulate its digestibility and the gut microbiota of elderly individuals

Food-derived mucins are glycoproteins rich in sialic acid, but their digestive properties and potential health benefits for humans have been scarcely investigated. In this work, ovomucin (OVM, rich in N-acetylneuraminic acid, about 3 %), porcine small intestinal mucin (PSIM, rich in N-glycolylneuraminic acid, about 1 %), the desialylated OVM (AOVM) and the desialylated PSIM (APSIM) were selected to examine their digestion and their impact on the gut microbiota of elderly individuals. The results shown that, the proportion of low-molecular-weight proteins increased after simulated digestion of these four mucins, with concomitant comparable antioxidant activity observed. Desialylation markedly increased the degradation and digestion rate of mucins. In vitro fecal fermentation was conducted with these mucins using fecal samples from individuals of different age groups: young, low-age and high-age elderly. Fecal fermentation with mucin digestive solution stimulated the production of organic acids in the group with fecal sample of the elderly individuals. Among them, the OVM group demonstrated the most favorable outcomes. The OVM and APSIM groups elevated the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, while diminishing the presence of pathogenic bacteria such as Klebsiella. Conversely, the probiotic effects of AOVM and PSIM were attenuated or even exhibited adverse effects. Hence, mucins originating from different sources and possessing distinct glycosylation patterns exhibit diverse biological functions. Our findings can offer valuable insights for developing a well-balanced and nutritious diet tailored to the elderly population.

The Interplay between Gut Microbiota and Cognitive Functioning in the Healthy Aging Population: A Systematic Review.

The gut microbiota in healthy older individuals typically show a decrease in beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, alongside an increase in pro-inflammatory microbes such as Enterobacteriaceae and Clostridia. These changes contrast with younger and middle-aged individuals and appear to correlate with cognitive status. Although there is extensive research on gut microbiota and cognitive functions in cognitively impaired elderly individuals, its impact on cognitively healthy elderly populations has not been extensively studied. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to identify studies exploring the relationship between gut microbiota composition and cognitive functioning in healthy older adults. During the literature screening process, each record was initially assessed by its title, abstract, and keywords to exclude articles that did not align with the scope of this review. Three authors independently screened and retrieved the records. The inclusion criteria included: (1) publication in peer-reviewed journals; (2) studies involving neurologically, cognitively, and medically healthy populations; (3) participants identified as older adults, defined for this review as individuals aged 45 years and older due to the limited number of records; (4) analysis of gut microbiota; and (5) assessment of cognitive function. Subsequently, full texts were analyzed to determine eligibility. The exclusion criteria encompassed: (1) incorrect publication type; (2) inappropriate sample population; (3) unsuitable study design; (4) absence of one or more inclusion criteria; and (5) studies based on animal research. A risk of bias assessment was performed for each included study using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist, ensuring all selected studies met established quality standards. A total of 6 eligible research articles from a possible 1752 published until March 2024 were identified and included. We categorized the included studies into two groups based on their focus: the taxonomic composition of gut microbiota and the alpha diversity, which is the variety of organisms within a sample. Additionally, two methods were identified for assessing cognition: neuropsychological tests and physiological measurements, notably electroencephalography (EEG). The studies show varying results regarding the abundance of specific bacterial taxa and their cognitive associations. Notably, the relationship between certain bacteria and cognition may vary when analyzed at different taxonomic levels, such as phylum versus family. Changes in gut microbiota composition in the elderly, even without a cognitive impairment diagnosis, could potentially serve as early biological markers for Alzheimer's disease or other dementias before mild cognitive impairment appears.

Quantitative evaluation of gut microbiota composition in pancreatic cancer: A pooled study.

Prior research has demonstrated a positive association between the composition of gut microbiota and the incidence of pancreatic cancer. Nevertheless, a thorough quantitative and systematic evaluation of the distinct properties of gut microbiota in individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer has yet to be conducted. The objective of this study is to examine alterations in the diversity of intestinal microbiota in individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Search for relevant literature published before July 2023 in 4 databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, without any language restrictions. A total of 12 studies were included, including 535 patients with pancreatic cancer and 677 healthy controls. Analysis was conducted on 6 phyla, 16 genera, and 6 species. The study found significant and distinctive changes in the α-diversity of gut microbiota, as well as in the relative abundance of multiple gut bacterial groups at the phylum, genus, and species levels in pancreatic cancer patients. Overall, there are certain characteristic changes in the gut microbiota of pancreatic cancer patients. However, further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanism of action and the potential for treatment.

Role of Triphala on Gut Microbiota in the Treatment of Obesity and its Complications

Obesity is a rapidly increasing global public health concern with a prevalence of 40.3% in India. Obesity is also a significant risk influence for ailments including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, coronary heart condition, osteoarthritis, cancer and mental illness. This review investigates the potential role of Triphala in the treatment of obesity and its complications on gut microbiota. Method: We selected relevant articles after searching Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords Triphala, Obesity, DM, CVD, and Gut microbiota. Obesity and related complications are considered by definite changes within the human gut microbiome. The gut microbiota of individuals with obesity contains lower proportions of Bacteroidetes and greater amounts of Firmicutes. Gut microbiota modulation and revitalization are emerging as potential obesity prevention and/or treatment strategies via probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, or faecal transplants. Research showed that butyrate generating bacteria like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila, were greatest in normal people, but that Bacteroides were halved in diabetes patients. The host metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk may be influenced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from gut microbiota. A placebo-controlled trial concluded that Triphala includes a hopeful role in reducing weight, circumferential measures and body fat. Triphala's prebiotic effect was studied using in vitro batch cultures, fruit fly, and a simulated model of the human alimentary tract, where Triphala promoted the growth of good bacteria while inhibiting pathogenic species in each model. Clinical research is still under progress on the effect of Triphala on Stool Microbiome Profiles and Inflammation. The action of Triphala in altering the gut microbiota for effective management of obesity and its complications is yet to be studied. Here we recommend the potential action of Triphala in managing obesity and its complications by targeting gut microbiota.

Effect of Chaihu-Shugan-San on functional dyspepsia and gut microbiota: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Ethnopharmacological relevanceChaihu-Shugan-San (CSS) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula from the Ming Dynasty "Jingyue's Complete Works”. In China, it is prevalent for the treatment of a wide range of ailments, with a particular emphasis on functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Clinical evidence suggests that CSS has been found to be a highly effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of Functional Dyspepsia (FD), however, there is a limited amount of high-quality clinical evidence, particularly randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials to support this claim. Aim of the studyTo evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS) for treating functional dyspepsia (FD) by comparing it to placebos, as well as to investigate the impact of CSS on the gut microbiota in individuals diagnosed with FD. Materials and methodsThis was a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial implemented at Shuguang Hospital in Shanghai. Between May 2021 and December 2022, 94 participants satisfying the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for FD were enrolled. They were assigned randomly to either the CSS group or the placebo group, with an equal allocation ratio of 1:1. Patients in both groups received the intervention for four weeks. The primary outcome was the dyspepsia symptom scores evaluated by using single dyspepsia symptom scale (SDS) after four weeks of treatment. The secondary outcomes were the solid gastric empties rate measured by a barium strip method, Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA), Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), and Functional dyspepsia Quality of life scale (FDDQL). In addition, after unblinding, 30 patients in the CSS group were randomly selected and divided into before and after treatment of the FD groups (FD1, FD2), and 30 healthy participants were selected as healthy control group (HC), and the gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. ResultsAfter four weeks of treatment, the SDS score exhibited a significant improvement in the CSS group compared to the placebo group (t = 4.882; P ＜0.001). The difference in barium strip gastric emptying rate in the CSS group showed a significant ascent compared to the control group (P < 0.01). The HAMA, HAMD, and FDDQL scores in the CSS group showed a statistically significant increase compared to the control group (all P < 0.01). The results of 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that FD patients had less diverse and abundant microbiota than the healthy people. Additionally, the application of CSS resulted in the modulation of certain bacterial populations, leading to both up-regulation and down-regulation of their quantities. ConclusionsThese findings suggested that CSS is more effective compared to a placebo in treating FD, relieves anxiety and depression, increases gastric emptying rate in FD patients, and that CSS also affects the bacterial community structure in FD patients. Constitutive immunity is influenced by avian influenza virus-induced modification of gut microbiota in Eurasian teal (Anas crecca)

Understanding the dynamics of migrant birds' gut microbial communities is essential for evaluating their ecological interactions, since these birds act as vectors for zoonotic viruses and their gut microbiome may have exceptional relationship with zoonotic viral infection. The Eurasian teal duck Anas crecca traverses continents during migration, combining and providing intercontinental links for avian influenza viruses (AIV) of different origins. The present study aimed to investigate how the AIV infection affects gut microbial composition and evaluate the consequent physiological stress and constitutive immunity of teal birds. Samples were collected from 2 flocks during their migratory stopover in northern Egypt. An important shift in gut microbiota of AIV-infected individuals has been detected by RT-PCR. In healthy teal, firmicutes dominated followed by proteobacteria, while the structure was reversed in infected birds. Infection with AIV significantly increased the stress hormone corticosterone, accompanied by a significant increase in both oxidative stress markers and antioxidants. Constitutive immunity, measured by plasma bactericidal effect against E. coli, the nonspecific natural antibodies, and the mediated complement activation, was reduced in AIV-infected teal birds. Constitutive immunity parameters were proportionally correlated to the firmicutes and inversely to the proteobacteria abundances, but not to the viral positivity. In conclusion, the present study provides initial evidence of the alteration of the gut microbiome in the Eurasian teal Anas crecca by AIV infection and demonstrates that the AIV-induced reduction in constitutive immunity is a consequence of the shift in microbiome composition rather than the virus infection itself or its induced stress.

Alterations in the diversity, composition and function of the gut microbiota in Uyghur individuals with sarcopenia

BackgroundResearch on the gut microbiota has emerged as a new direction for understanding pathophysiologic changes in diseases associated with aging, such as sarcopenia. Several studies have shown that there are differences in the gut microbiota between individuals with sarcopenia and without sarcopenia. However, these differences are not consistent across regions and ethnic groups, and additional research is needed. MethodsIn this study, we collected fresh fecal samples from 31 Uyghur individuals with sarcopenia and 31 healthy controls. We used 16S rRNA sequencing to obtain fecal base sequences and analyzed the diversity, composition and function of the gut microbiota. ResultsThere was no significant difference in alpha diversity between the sarcopenia group and the healthy control group (P > 0.05). There was a significant difference in beta diversity between the groups (P < 0.05). In the sarcopenia group, the abundances of Alloprevotella, un_f_Prevotellaceae, Anaerovibrio, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Mitsuokella, Prevotella and Allisonella were lower than those in the heathy control group, and the abundances of Flavobacteriales, Flavobacteriaceae, Catenibacterium, Romboutsia, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG-003, GCA-900066575, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group, and un_f_Flavobacteriaceae were higher than those in the heathy control group. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) revealed that the microbial species in the control group that were significantly different from those in the sarcopenia group were concentrated in the genus Alloprevotella, while the species in the sarcopenia group were concentrated in the genus Catenibacterium. Functional prediction analysis revealed that D-alanine, glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and transcription machinery, among others, were enriched in the sarcopenia group, which indicated that metabolic pathways related to amino acid metabolism and nutrient transport may be regulated to varying degrees in the pathophysiological context of sarcopenia. ConclusionsThere were significant differences in the composition and function of the gut microbiota between Xinjiang Uyghur sarcopenia individuals and healthy individuals. These findings might aid in the development of probiotics or microbial-based therapies for sarcopenia in Uyhur individuals.

The role of gut microbiota on obesity management: a review of the evidence

In the last 40 years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are overweight, obese and experience combined metabolic disorders. Gut microbiota has been shown to influence energy metabolism and is therefore a significant factor in the development of obesity. A person's diet, in particular, the nutritional value of that diet, is a crucial connection between gut microbiota composition and metabolism. This review explores the role of normal colonic microbiota and the gut environment. These mechanisms connect microbiota with obesity, the presence of gut microbiota in obese individuals and the impact of bioactive compounds in dairy products on gut microbiota. Research shows that gut microbiota play a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism and influencing the development of obesity. Changes in diet can alter the composition and levels of gut microbiota, and consuming bioactive components can help reshape the metabolic profile of obese individuals.

Effects of bathing in different hot spring types on Japanese gut microbiota

Hot springs have been used for a variety of purposes, including the treatment and amelioration of illness and recreation. Japan has ten different types of therapeutic springs (described here as spa types), which are traditionally believed to have different efficacy. However, more research must be conducted to determine how they affect healthy people. Therefore, this study focused on the gut microbiota and aimed to investigate changes in the gut microbiota in healthy people after bathing in different spa types. Using Beppu's hot springs (simple, chloride, bicarbonate, sulfur, and sulfate types), 136 healthy Japanese adults living in the Kyushu area participated in the study and bathed in the same hot spring for seven days. Fecal samples were collected before and after the 7-day bathing period, and the relative abundance of the gut microbiota was determined by 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium bifidum increased significantly after seven consecutive days of bathing in the bicarbonate spring. Significant increases in other gut microbiota were also observed after bathing in simple, bicarbonate, and sulfur springs. These results suggest that bathing in different hot springs may affect the gut microbiota in healthy individuals differently.

Gut microbiota reflect adaptation of cave-dwelling tadpoles to resource scarcity.

Gut microbiota are significant to the host's nutrition and provide a flexible way for the host to adapt to extreme environments. However, whether gut microbiota help the host to colonize caves, a resource-limited environment, remains unknown. The nonobligate cave frog Oreolalax rhodostigmatus completes its metamorphosis within caves for 3-5years before foraging outside. Their tadpoles are occasionally removed from the caves by floods and utilize outside resources, providing a contrast to the cave-dwelling population. For both cave and outside tadpoles, the development-related reduction in their growth rate and gut length during prometamorphosis coincided with a shift in their gut microbiota, which was characterized by decreased Lactobacillus and Cellulosilyticum and Proteocatella in the cave and outside individuals, respectively. The proportion of these three genera was significantly higher in the gut microbiota of cave-dwelling individuals compared with those outside. The cave-dwellers' gut microbiota harbored more abundant fibrolytic, glycolytic, and fermentative enzymes and yielded more short-chain fatty acids, potentially benefitting the host's nutrition. Experimentally depriving the animals of food resulted in gut atrophy for the individuals collected outside the cave, but not for those from inside the cave. Imitating food scarcity reproduced some major microbial features (e.g. abundant Proteocatella and fermentative genes) of the field-collected cave individuals, indicating an association between the cave-associated gut microbiota and resource scarcity. Overall, the gut microbiota may reflect the adaptation of O. rhodostigmatus tadpoles to resource-limited environments. This extends our understanding of the role of gut microbiota in the adaptation of animals to extreme environments.
